August Alwardt Sr.

August Alwardt, Sr and Mary Dehn were married in 1863, and they came to America in 1873. They lived in New York for approximately one year, and then made their way west to Illinois. They originally settled in the Bethlehem area, but after a short time, they moved to Zion which is now in Jackson Township. August Alwardt Sr. was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church which was chartered on April 16, 1893.

August and Mary had 3 daughters and 5 sons. Children Caroline and Henry were born in Mecklenburg Schwerin, Germany. A male child (name unhknown) died and was buried at sea during the voyage to America. The others were born in Illinois.
